PUC Investigates York Water Rate Increase Request

Published on 6/1/2006

HARRISBURG –The Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission (PUC) today voted to investigate York Water Company’s request to increase water rates by $4,549,737 (16 percent).

Under the company’s proposal, the annual bill for an average residential customer on the gravity system using 60,000 gallons of water would increase about $47 from $292 to $339.  For a consumer on the repumping system using 60,000 gallons of water, the annual bill increases by about $64 from $393 to $457.

By order of law, the proposed increase will be suspended until Jan. 26, 2007. The Commission voted 5-0 to assign it to a PUC administrative law judge for a recommended decision or settlement.  PUC Commissioners will then make a final decision by Jan. 26, 2007 at a public meeting in Harrisburg.

The increase would affect approximately 55,731 customers in York. According to the company, the increase is needed to allow the company to continue to provide adequate, safe and reliable service; to provide sufficient revenues to recover the cost of providing water service to its customers and to maintain its facilities.

The Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission ensures safe, reliable and reasonably priced electric, natural gas, water, telephone and transportation service for Pennsylvania consumers, by regulating public utilities and by serving as responsible stewards of competition.
