PUC Suspends Water Rate Increase Request by Clarion County Water Company

HARRISBURG—The Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission (PUC) today voted to suspend and investigate a Corner Water Supply & Service Corporation request to increase water rates by $41,829 (13.9 percent) for its customers.

The Commission voted 5-0 to suspend the proposed increase for up to seven months from its Sept. 1, 2006 proposed effective date and assigned to a PUC administrative law judge for a recommended decision or settlement. The Commission has until April 1, 2007 to make a final decision at a public meeting in Harrisburg.

Under the company’s proposal, the annual bill for an average customer using 42,000 gallons of water a year would increase by about $53 a year. The average annual residential bill would increase from about $378 to $431.

Corner Water Supply & Service Corporation serves about 566 customers in and around Shippenville, Clarion County.  The company said the primary reason for the rate increase is to relieve the company from poor operating results.
