Eight State Agencies to Join Together to Commemorate Black History Month

HARRISBURG – Eight state agencies will celebrate the contributions of Africans and African Americans as they join together to mark Black History Month.

          The Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission, Historical and Museum Commission, the Governor's Advisory Commission on African American Affairs and the Departments of State, Community and Economic Development, Aging, General Services and Banking will commemorate Black History Month at noon Feb. 8, 2007, at the Forum in Harrisburg. The event is free and op en to the public.

          This year’s theme is “From Slavery to Freedom: The Story of Africans in the Americas.”  The program will feature a theatrical presentation by the Pin Point Theater (Washington, D.C.) titled  “1001 Black Inventions,” a fascinating short play about the intellectual contributions of Africans and African Americans.

           Dr. Rita Smith Wade-El, coordinator of the African American studies program at Millersville University, also will speak on the struggles of people of African descent as they sought to achieve freedom and equality during the era of emancipation. 

            Also featured is The Nativity School Boys Choir, under the Direction of Christyan Seay.
