PUC Investigates Rate Increase Request by Valley Energy Inc. of Bradford County

HARRISBURG – The Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission (PUC) today voted to investigate Valley Energy’s request to increase its annual revenues by about $638,025 (7 percent).
The Commission voted unanimously to investigate the request, which represents about a 5.9 percent increase in annual rates for residential consumers. Under the company’s proposal, the annual bill for an average customer using 76 Mcf would increase about $63 from $1,068 to $1,131.
By operation of law, the proposed increase will be suspended for up to seven months from its proposed effective date. The Commission voted to open an investigation and assign it to a PUC administrative law judge for a recommended decision or settlement. PUC Commissioners will then make a final decision by Jan. 29, 2008, at a public meeting in Harrisburg.
The increase would affect about 4,785 residential customers and about 777 commercial, industrial and transportation customers in the Boroughs of Athens, Sayre, South Waverly and Towanda; and the Townships of Athens, North Towanda, Ulster and Wysox, all in Bradford County.
According to the company, the increase is needed to increase Valley Energy’s rate of return in order to support the continuation of its efforts to improve its natural gas system.
The Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission balances the needs of consumers and utilities to ensure safe and reliable utility service at reasonable rates; protect the public interest; educate consumers to make independent and informed utility choices; further economic development; and foster new technologies and competitive markets in an environmentally sound manner.
