PUC Fines Monroe County Taxi Company $1,000 for Violations

Published on 12/20/2007

HARRISBURG – The Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission (PUC) today fined Pocono Cab Co. of Stroudsburg, Monroe County, $1,000 for rendering service to a different territory than authorized in its certificate of public convenience.

By law, companies are required to hold a certificate of public convenience from the PUC in order to transport property, passengers or household goods within the state.  Holding a certificate of public convenience ensures that the company has met all of the PUC’s safety and insurance standards.

On June 3, 2005, the Commission’s Bureau of Transportation and Safety filed a complaint alleging that Pocono had provided service outside of the territory defined by its certificate of public convenience 27 times between Jan. 5 and March 29, 2005.

On Nov. 17, 2005, the Bureau of Transportation and Safety filed a second complaint alleging that Pocono had provided service outside of its territory twelve times between May 31 and June 26, 2005.

A settlement was reached on Nov. 14, 2007, reducing Pocono’s penalty from $9,750 to $1,000 and eliminating the need for further litigation.

The Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission balances the needs of consumers and utilities to ensure safe and reliable utility service at reasonable rates; protect the public interest; educate consumers to make independent and informed utility choices; further economic development; and foster new technologies and competitive markets in an environmentally sound manner.
