PUC: Consumers May Have to Turn the Heat Back on as Pennsylvania Prepares for Six More Weeks of Winter

HARRISBURG – While the world’s most famous weatherman is calling for six more weeks of winter, the Public Utility Commission (PUC) reminds consumers that many Pennsylvanians are still without use of a central heating system or are using a potentially unsafe heating source in their homes.

“Punxsutawney Phil says the winter season is in full force as we begin the month of February.  Now is a good time to think about conserving your home’s heat and for those who are without a central heating system to get reconnected,” said Commission Chairman Wendell F. Holland.  “While it is good news that about 30 percent more households have utility service than those that did in December, more than 11,000 of our neighbors are continuing the winter months without service.  All consumers who are without a central heating system should take action today to restore and maintain service to ward off the winter chill.”

As of Feb. 1, 2008, the total number of homes not using a central heating system was 11,495, a 32 percent reduction from the Dec. 15, 2007, total of 16,857.  A chart of the individual company statistics is available online.  In December 2007, about 13,762 households were without heat-related utility service, with an additional 3,095 residences using potentially unsafe heating sources.  The total number not using a central heating system in December 2006 was 19,745 and 15,491 in February 2007.

The PUC urges customers to know their rights when it comes to utility service.  Programs are available to help qualifying low-income consumers pay their bills or restore service.  Consumers should call their utility first.  If they are unable to reach an agreement with the utility, call the PUC for assistance at 1-800-692-7380.

The Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission balances the needs of consumers and utilities to ensure safe and reliable utility service at reasonable rates; protect the public interest; educate consumers to make independent and informed utility choices; further economic development; and foster new technologies and competitive markets in an environmentally sound manner.
