PUC Invites Public to Upcoming Celebration of Celtic Women Program on March 24

HARRISBURG – The Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission (PUC) invites interested members of the public to a program in celebration of National Women’s History Month.  The program will be held on March 24, 2008, from 12:10 p.m. to 1 p.m. in PUC Hearing Room 1, Commonwealth Keystone Building, Second Floor, 400 North St., Harrisburg.

This year’s program is “Distinguished Irish and Irish American Women,” and is part of the PUC’s Celebration of Celtic Women Series.  The program coincides with Gov. Ed Rendell’s designation of March 2008 as both Women’s History Month and Irish Heritage Month.

        Highlights of the program include:

• Young, award-winning female bagpiper Geordie Hall
• Tribute to Republic of Ireland President Mary McAleese by PUC Vice Chairman James H. Cawley
• Traditional Irish dancers from the McGinley School of Irish Dance
• Recognition of several distinguished Irish American women in Central Pennsylvania by PUC Commissioner Kim Pizzingrilli
• Recitation of speeches and poetry produced by Irish women

Program co-chairs Cholly Shields and Nancy Hogan Depew encourage attendees to quickly secure their seats in Hearing Room 1 on the second floor of the Keystone Building shortly after noon on March 24, as a grand-sized audience is anticipated.

The Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission balances the needs of consumers and utilities to ensure safe and reliable utility service at reasonable rates; protect the public interest; educate consumers to make independent and informed utility choices; further economic development; and foster new technologies and competitive markets in an environmentally sound manner.
