HARRISBURG – In its third conservation-related announcement leading up to Earth Day, April 22, the Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission (PUC) asked Pennsylvania utility customers to consider making an “Earth Day Pledge” to conserve water this Earth Day and every day.  The PUC today made its own pledge:  to continue its successful celebrations of National Drinking Water Week, May 5 through May 9, with a Harrisburg-area media event highlighting sustainable infrastructure on Tuesday, May 6, and educational exhibits in the Atrium of the state Capitol Complex’s Commonwealth Keystone Building on Wednesday, May 7.

“This Earth Day, pledge to learn more about our most precious natural resource, water, and ways you can conserve,” said PUC Chairman Wendell F. Holland.  “And pledge to join the PUC, and Pennsylvania’s water companies, state agencies and water-related organizations the week of May 5th in Harrisburg as we again mark National Drinking Water Week.  Everyone -- school groups, scouts, state employees and the general public -- is welcome to tour the exhibits.  ‘Prepare Now:  Be Water Wise.’”

Commissioner Kim Pizzingrilli said home improvements such as low-flow showerheads, simple adjustments to bathroom fixtures and frontload washing machines allow consumers to save water while saving money.

“The PUC is a partner in WaterSense, a program of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency for residential consumers,” Commissioner Pizzingrilli said.  “Look for products bearing the WaterSense mark, guaranteed to meet thresholds for conservation, much like the EnergyStar program for electricity.  Learn more by visiting www.epa.gov/watersense. “

All this week and continuing until Earth Day, April 22, the Commission will distribute conservation tips for consumers, including guidance on how to conserve water and some simple spring cleaning chores that may make your home more energy efficient.  For additional information on how to conserve water, visit the Consumer Education section of our Web site.

The Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission balances the needs of consumers and utilities to ensure safe and reliable utility service at reasonable rates; protect the public interest; educate consumers to make independent and informed utility choices; further economic development; and foster new technologies and competitive markets in an environmentally sound manner.
