PUC to Investigate NRG Energy Center Rate Increase Request

Published on 5/22/2008

HARRISBURG – The Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission (PUC) today voted to investigate a rate increase request for steam service by the NRG Energy Center Harrisburg, LLC (NRG Harrisburg).

The Commission voted 4-0 to investigate the company’s request that would increase the company’s annual revenues by $1.875 million (15 percent).  Under the company’s proposal, customers’ total rates would increase by approximately 18 percent.

According to NRG Harrisburg, the new rates will enable NRG Harrisburg to cover its operating expenses and provide a revenue steam that will allow NRG Harrisburg to fund new investment that enhances system reliability and efficiency.  Virtually all of the new investments made since its 1995 rate case are intended to increase energy efficiency.

NRG Harrisburg owns and operates the steam plant which has provided steam service to approximately 232 residential, industrial, commercial and governmental customers located in the city of Harrisburg, Dauphin County, for a number of years.    The Commission has until Jan. 1, 2009, to make its final decision at a Public Meeting in Harrisburg.

The Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission balances the needs of consumers and utilities to ensure safe and reliable utility service at reasonable rates; protect the public interest; educate consumers to make independent and informed utility choices; further economic development; and foster new technologies and competitive markets in an environmentally sound manner.
