PUC Approves Rate Increase for Luzerne County Water Co.
Published on 6/24/2008
HARRISBURG – The Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission (PUC) today voted to approve a rate increase request by Sand Springs Water Company Inc., Luzerne County.
The Commission voted 4-0 to allow the company to raise its rates by about $30,086 (32.5 percent). The new rates will increase the average annual bill for residential customers based on an average usage of 4,000 gallons per month by about $123 from $360.00 to $483.00. The company provides service to 252 customers in portions of Butler Township, Luzerne County. The Commission found the company’s need for an increase was to recover the costs of providing water service not fully reflected in the company’s current charges and to recover increases due to inflation.
The Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission balances the needs of consumers and utilities to ensure safe and reliable utility service at reasonable rates; protect the public interest; educate consumers to make independent and informed utility choices; further economic development; and foster new technologies and competitive markets in an environmentally sound manner.
