PUC Approves Rate Increase for Bedford County Water Co.

Published on 12/18/2008

HARRISBURG – The Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission (PUC) today approved a rate increase requested by Hyndman Borough Water Co., Bedford County.

The Commission voted 5-0 to allow the company to raise its rates by about $31,432 (27.1 percent).  The average annual rates for unmetered residential customers will go from $234 a year to $300.

The company provides service to about 462 residential customers. However, the PUC only has jurisdiction over the 20 customers living outside the borough limits.  The company said the increase was needed because of an overall increase in expenses; a current water line replacement project; and needed improvements to the water treatment plant.

The Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission balances the needs of consumers and utilities to ensure safe and reliable utility service at reasonable rates; protect the public interest; educate consumers to make independent and informed utility choices; further economic development; and foster new technologies and competitive markets in an environmentally sound manner.
