HARRISBURG – The Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission (PUC) today approved a West Penn Power Co. transmission project that will provide service to a new AK Steel electric arc furnace.

“AK Steel is an important part of the economic viability of the Butler County region,” said Commission Vice Chairman Tyrone J. Christy. “Approving this transmission line will allow AK Steel to proceed with plans for a new electric arc furnace.”

The Commission voted 5-0 to approve the location and construction of a 435-foot, 138-kilovolt transmission line in Butler Township, Butler County. The line will be built entirely within an easement on AK Steel property. The project is expected to cost about $566,000 and will be paid for by AK Steel. Construction is expected to begin in February with the line to be in service in July.

The Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission balances the needs of consumers and utilities to ensure safe and reliable utility service at reasonable rates; protect the public interest; educate consumers to make independent and informed utility choices; further economic development; and foster new technologies and competitive markets in an environmentally sound manner.
