HARRISBURG – To establish a dialogue on alternative energy solutions on the grassroots level with energy leaders of tomorrow, the Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission (PUC) today hosted the Central Dauphin High School Green Power Club.

“These young people have taken the initiative to develop an innovative idea for the use of alternative energy,” said Commissioner Wayne E. Gardner. “Pennsylvania is a leader in alternative energy development. With that, it’s important that we encourage that development at all levels. These students are impressive with their proposals. It’s only natural that we provide them with access to the people and resources that can make their idea a reality.”

The CD Green Power Club is developing a portable generator powered by alternative energy sources such as wind and solar power that is designed to provide electricity possibly to a scoreboard for some of the district’s athletic fields. PUC Chairman James H. Cawley and Commissioner Kim Pizzingrilli also talked with the students about alternative energy and their project.

The students, who brought a prototype of the student designed portable generator, also spoke with representatives from Conergy, global solar experts, and Gamesa, a leading wind-technology corporation. The students shared their ideas and goals for alternative energy uses within their school and received advice on their ideas and recommendations on funding sources from the industry experts.

The Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission balances the needs of consumers and utilities to ensure safe and reliable utility service at reasonable rates; protect the public interest; educate consumers to make independent and informed utility choices; further economic development; and foster new technologies and competitive markets in an environmentally sound manner.
