PUC Approves Rate Increase for Fayette County Water Company

HARRISBURG – The Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission (PUC) today voted to approve a rate increase for the Borough of Fairchance in Fayette County.

The Commission voted 5-0 to allow the Borough of Fairchance to raise its rates by about $22,540 (6.05 percent).  The new rates will increase the monthly minimum charge for customers from $18.50 to $19.50.  Additionally, there will be a $4.25 charge for every 1,000 gallons used after the initial 3,000 gallon allowance contained in the monthly minimum charge of $19.50.  After reflecting the approved rate increase and the change in charges, the average annual bill for residential customers using 36,000 gallons per year would increase from $222 to $234 (5.4 percent), which is consistent with the overall rate increase.

The Commission directed the Borough of Fairchance to eliminate all water allowances from the monthly minimum charge in its next rate filing. The new rates will go into effect June 19, 2009. The Commission found the company’s need for an increase was to recover the costs of chemicals and compliance regulations.

The Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission balances the needs of consumers and utilities to ensure safe and reliable utility service at reasonable rates; protect the public interest; educate consumers to make independent and informed utility choices; further economic development; and foster new technologies and competitive markets in an environmentally sound manner.
