HARRISBURG – The Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission (PUC) today voted to approve a settlement approving a lower rate increase than requested by Needmore Water Supply Co., Fulton County.

The Commission voted 5-0 to approve the joint settlement, which was reached among the Commission’s Office of Trial Staff, the Office of Consumer Advocate and the company.  The settlement permits the company to raise its annual rates by $19,600 and to divide the overall increase into two phases, beginning with an immediate increase of $12,000 and an increase of $7,600 nine months later. The company originally proposed to increase its rates by $53,335.

Under the settlement, the quarterly bill for an average residential customer using 10,000 gallons per quarter will increase by $28.72 from $47.38 to $76.10 per quarter.  After the second phase of the company’s increase, the quarterly bill will increase by $18.18 from $76.10 to $94.28 per quarter. The company provides water service to approximately 105 customers in portions of Belfast Township.

The Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission balances the needs of consumers and utilities to ensure safe and reliable utility service at reasonable rates; protect the public interest; educate consumers to make independent and informed utility choices; further economic development; and foster new technologies and competitive markets in an environmentally sound manner.
