PUC Approves Rate Increase for York County Water Co.

Published on 11/19/2009

HARRISBURG – The Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission (PUC) today voted to approve an annual increase in rates for the Borough of Hanover, York County.

The Commission voted 5-0 to approve the increase in annual rates of $308,586 (10.24 percent) for jurisdictional customers receiving service outside of Hanover Borough. The average annual bill for residential customers using approximately 60,000 gallons a year will increase $18 from $196.12 to $214.12 (9.18 percent).

Hanover Municipal Waterworks provides service to 6,851 non-jurisdictional customers in Hanover Borough, and 9,879 jurisdictional customers in Penn Township, York County; Conewago Township and McSherrystown, Adams County.  The Borough says the reason for the increase is to continue to furnish adequate, safe and reliable water service; to provide cash flow to continue to maintain facilities; and to receive a marginal rate of return on the cost of investment in property.

The Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission balances the needs of consumers and utilities to ensure safe and reliable utility service at reasonable rates; protect the public interest; educate consumers to make independent and informed utility choices; further economic development; and foster new technologies and competitive markets in an environmentally sound manner.
