HARRISBURG – The Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission (PUC) today approved a settlement approving a lower increase in annual rates than requested by Utilities Inc. – Westgate, Northampton County.

The Commission voted 5-0 to approve the joint settlement which will allow Utilities Inc. to increase its annual rates by $44,452 (12.7 percent).  The company had originally requested to raise its annual rates $158,326 (45.4 percent).  The settlement was reached among the company, the PUC’s Office of Trial Staff and the state’s Office of Consumer Advocate.  The average monthly bill for 5/8” residential customers will increase from $36.80 a month to $41.46 per month.  The company said the increase is needed to cover increased operational costs and plant investment.

The Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission balances the needs of consumers and utilities to ensure safe and reliable utility service at reasonable rates; protect the public interest; educate consumers to make independent and informed utility choices; further economic development; and foster new technologies and competitive markets in an environmentally sound manner.
