HARRISBURG – The Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission (PUC) today voted to approve a settlement approving a lower rate increase than requested by Lake Spangenberg Water Co.

The Commission voted 4-0 to approve the joint settlement, which was reached among the Commission’s Office of Trial Staff, the Office of Consumer Advocate and the company.  The settlement permits the company to raise its rates by $30,000 (100 percent).  The company originally proposed to increase its rates by $92,292 (400 percent). Under the settlement, the bill for an average residential customer using 7,000 gallons per quarter will increase from $54.04 to $108.08 per quarter.

More information on the ratemaking process is available on the Commission’s website.

The company provides water service to approximately 145 customers in Jefferson Twp., Lackawanna County.  According to the company, the increase is necessary to recover increased operating expenses and debt incurred in its facilities replacement.

The Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission balances the needs of consumers and utilities to ensure safe and reliable utility service at reasonable rates; protect the public interest; educate consumers to make independent and informed utility choices; further economic development; and foster new technologies and competitive markets in an environmentally sound manner.
