PUC Schedules Public Input Hearing on Proposed Increase by York Water

HARRISBURG – The Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission (PUC) has scheduled a hearing to receive public comment on the proposed rate increase by York Water Co.

Administrative Law Judge (ALJ) David A. Salapa will conduct the hearing at:

            6 p.m. Aug. 18, 2010

            Holiday Inn Conference Center of York

            2000 Loucks Road

            York, PA 17408

            (located at U.S. Route 30 and 74, behind West Manchester Mall)

On June 16, 2010, the PUC voted to investigate York Water’s request to increase its rates by about $6.2 million (16 percent). Under the company’s proposal, the annual bill for an average residential customer using 60,456 gallons a year on the gravity system would increase about $59.04 (15.5 percent) from $380.28 to $439.32 per year.

Under the company’s proposal, the annual bill for an average residential customer using 49,572 gallons a year on the re-pumping system would increase about $81.12 (17.8 percent) from $455.28 to $536.40 per year.

A final decision must be made by Feb. 13, 2011. More information on the ratemaking process is available on the Commission’s website.     

York Water provides service to about 62,714 customers in portions of York and Adams counties.

Members of the public are welcome to attend the hearings and provide comments.  Customer testimony will become part of the record on which the PUC will issue its final decision. The PUC and state Office of Consumer Advocate offer tips on how to participate.  They include:

• Prepare what you are going to say beforehand.  Even though it is not required, you may want to write out your statement, which can be read.
• Bring copies.  If you have a written statement you would like to give to the judge as evidence, please bring two copies for the court reporter and several copies for the other participants.

• Plan to be questioned.  Parties in the case may want to ask you a question to clarify something you said.
