HARRISBURG – The Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission (PUC) today voted to allow an annual increase in electricity rates for some residents who receive their electric service through the Borough of Smethport, McKean County.

The Commission voted 5-0 to allow the increase in annual rates of $239,876 (16.1 percent) for customers in Keating Township, McKean County.  The PUC has jurisdiction over rates for the township residents receiving electric service from the Borough of Smethport.  The borough maintains the same rate structure for both its borough and township customers.

The average monthly bill for residential customers using approximately 565 kWh per month will increase $9.12 from $66.96 to $76.08 (13.62 percent).

The Borough of Smethport provides electric service to about 920 customers in Smethport and about 140 customers in Keating Township, with the rates for all customers increasing.

More information on the ratemaking process is available on the Commission’s website.

The Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission balances the needs of consumers and utilities to ensure safe and reliable utility service at reasonable rates; protect the public interest; educate consumers to make independent and informed utility choices; further economic development; and foster new technologies and competitive markets in an environmentally sound manner.
