PUC Approves Settlement for Lower Rate Increase than Requested by York Water Co.

HARRISBURG – The Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission (PUC) today voted to approve a settlement allowing a lower rate increase than requested by York Water Co.

The Commission voted 5-0 to approve the settlement, which was agreed to by the Office of Consumer Advocate, the PUC’s Office of Trial Staff and the Office of Small Business Advocate.

Under the settlement the company will raise monthly water rates by about $3.4 million (8.7 percent) as opposed to the $6.22 million (15.9 percent) originally requested.

Under the company’s original increase request, the annual bill for an average residential customer using 60,456 gallons a year on the gravity system would have increased about $59.04 (15.5 percent) from $380.28 to $439.32 per year. As a result of the settlement Residential gravity customers using 60,456 gallons per year will see an increase of $28.08 from $380.28 to $408.36. 

Under the company’s original proposal, the annual bill for an average residential customer using 49,572 gallons a year on the re-pumping system would have increased about $81.12 (17.8 percent) from $455.28 to $536.40 per year. As a result of the settlement, residential repumped customers using 49,572 gallons per year will see an increase of $36.84 (8.1 percent) from $455.28 to $492.12. 

York Water provides service to about 62,710 customers in portions of York and Adams counties.  More information on the ratemaking process is available on the Commission’s website.
