HARRISBURG – The Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission (PUC) today voted to approve a settlement for a lower rate increase than requested by Wellsboro Electric Co.

The Commission voted 5-0 to approve a settlement for the company to increase its distribution rates by $700,000 (19.04 percent). The company’s original proposal asked for an $870,100 (23.7 percent) increase. The settlement was agreed to by the formal parties in the case including the company, the Office of Consumer Advocate, the Office of Small Business Advocate and the PUC’s Office of Trial Staff.

According to the settlement, the average total bill for a customer using 700 kWh per month would increase by $8.41 per month (9.55 percent) from $88.07 to $96.48 a month.  Under the company’s original proposal, the average total bill for a residential customer using 700 kWh per month would have increased to $97.36 a month.  Wellsboro provides electric service to about 6,129 customers in the Borough of Wellsboro, Tioga County.

More information on the ratemaking process is available on the Commission’s website.
