PUC Fines Philadelphia County Paratransit Service $1,000 for Violations

HARRISBURG – The Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission (PUC) today fined Transit Aide Inc. $1,000 for violations of the Public Utility Code and Commission regulations.  

The Commission voted 5-0 to fine the company for a violation of transporting passengers for compensation between points in Pennsylvania while not holding a certificate of public convenience issued by the Commission at the time.

On Sept. 23, 2010, the Commission’s Bureau of Transportation and Safety (BTS) instituted a complaint against the company alleging that it transported passengers for compensation between points in the Commonwealth on May 21, 2010. 

By law, companies are required to hold a certificate of public convenience from the PUC in order to transport property, passengers or household goods within the state. Holding a certificate of public convenience ensures that the company has met all of the PUC’s safety and insurance standards.

The Commission also directed the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) to suspend the vehicle registration of the vehicle in use mentioned in the complaint.

Transit Aide Inc. provides paratransit service in Philadelphia County.   The certificate of public convenience was previously revoked by the Commission on Aug. 29, 2009 for failure to maintain evidence of insurance on file with the Commission
