PUC Schedules Eight Public Input Hearings in Pennsylvania American Water Co. Rate Increase Request

HARRISBURG – The Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission (PUC) has scheduled eight hearings to receive public comment on the proposed rate changes by Pennsylvania American Water Co.

An administrative law judge (ALJ) will conduct the hearings at:

On June 9, 2011, The Commission voted 5-0 to investigate the request.   A final decision must be made by Jan. 28, 2012.  More information on the ratemaking process is available on the Commission’s website.     

The proposed annual increases and decreases are as follows:

  • $581.40 to $658.44 (13.3 percent) for residential customers including Butler, City of Pittsburgh, Coatesville, Hershey, Mechanicsburg, Pittsburgh-McMurray, Scranton-Wilkes-Barre areas with an annual use of 49,800 gallons. 
  • $524.40 to $658.44 (25.6 percent) for residential customers including Lehman Pike and Palmer Areas with an annual use of of 49,800 gallons.
  • $435.96 to $658.44 (51 percent) for residential customers in the Monroe County area with an annual usage of 49,800 gallons.
  • $511.69 to $658.44 for residential customers in the Boggs and Centre County areas with an annual usage of 49,800 gallons.
  • $202.80 to $427.80 (110.9 percent) in the Nittany area for residential customers with an annual usage of 49,800 gallons.
  • $381.35 to $658.44 (72.7 percent) for residential customers in the Sutton Hills area with an annual usage of 49,800 gallons.
  • $686.28 to $658.44 (-4.1 percent) for residential customers in the Birch Acres area with an annual usage of 49,800 gallons.

Members of the public are welcome to attend the hearings and provide comments.  Customer testimony will become part of the record on which the PUC will issue its final decision. The PUC and state Office of Consumer Advocate offer tips on how to participate.  They include:

  • Prepare what you are going to say beforehand.  Even though it is not required, you may want to write out your statement, which can be read.
  • Bring copies.  If you have a written statement you would like to give to the judge as evidence, please bring two copies for the court reporter and several copies for the other participants.
  • Plan to be questioned.  Parties in the case may want to ask you a question to clarify something you said.
