HARRISBURG – The Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission (PUC) today approved a settlement approving a lower rate increase than requested by Newtown Artesian Water Co.
The Commission voted 4-0 to approve the settlement, which was reached among the company, the PUC’s Bureau of Investigation and Enforcement, and the state’s Office of Consumer Advocate.
The settlement allows the company to increase its annual rates by $350,000. Newtown Artesian originally requested an increase in annual rates of $999,839 to be implemented in two phases.
Under the settlement, the average residential water customer in the Newtown rate area using 15,000 gallons per quarter will increase $9.31 (10.2 percent) from $90.98 to $100.29 per quarter. The average residential water customer in the Indian Rock rate area using 15,000 gallons per quarter will increase $1.74 (1.6 percent) from $105.75 to $107.49 per quarter.
Under the company’s original proposal, the rate increase would have occurred in two steps. Under that proposal, the typical residential customer in the Newtown rate area using 15,000 gallons per quarter would have increased by $21.43 (24.6 percent) from $87.26 to $102.08 for the first step and from $102.08 to $ 108.69 per quarter for the second step. Under that proposal, the typical residential customer in the Indian Rock rate area using 15,000 gallons per quarter would have increased by and by $13.86 (13.6 percent) from $102.03 to $109.28 per quarter for the first step and from $109.28 to $115.89 per quarter on for the second step.
Newtown Artesian provides service to about 10,235 customers in portions of Bucks County.
