PITTSBURGH – Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission Vice Chairman John F. Coleman Jr. today joined western Pennsylvania natural gas utilities and Pittsburgh Steeler Hall of Famer Franco Harris to kick off the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP), which is open for applications.

“The PUC knows the winter months are fast upon us,” said Vice Chairman John F. Coleman Jr.  “We want to make sure that all Pennsylvanians know that eligibility for the LIHEAP program has changed and how to apply for the funding.  Even if you were not eligible in prior years, under the new guidelines, you may be now.”

LIHEAP helps low-income individuals pay their home heating bills through energy assistance grants.  The program opened for applications on Nov. 1 and is scheduled to close March 30, 2012.  However, the length of the program may change depending on availability of funds and other factors.

Applications for LIHEAP are available at county assistance offices, local utility companies and community service agencies, such as Area Agencies on Aging and community action agencies or by visiting the Department of Public Welfare’s web site at http://www.dpw.state.pa.us/foradults/heatingassistanceliheap/S_000960.

The PUC’s message is simple: “Prepare Now” for higher energy costs this winter.  Learn about changes in the law related to utility shut-offs and know your rights.  Save money by learning how to conserve energy.  Heat your home safely.  Explore budget billing options. Look into programs that help low-income customers restore and maintain service. Visit www.puc.state.pa.us and click on "Prepare Now" or call the PUC at 1-800-692-7380.

The Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission balances the needs of consumers and utilities to ensure safe and reliable utility service at reasonable rates; protect the public interest; educate consumers to make independent and informed utility choices; further economic development; and foster new technologies and competitive markets in an environmentally sound manner.
