PUC Approves Settlement for Lower Rate Increase than Requested by Columbia Gas

HARRISBURG –The Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission (PUC) today voted to approve a settlement for a lower rate increase than requested by Columbia Gas of Pennsylvania (Columbia Gas).
The Commission voted 5-0 to approve the settlement, which was agreed to by the formal parties in the case including the company, the Office of Consumer Advocate, the Office of Small Business Advocate and the PUC’s Bureau of Investigation and Enforcement. PUC Commissioner James H. Cawley issued a statement.
According to the settlement, the company will increase rates by $55.25 million (14.64 percent). The company’s original proposal asked for a $77.3 million (20.61percent) increase.
The total monthly bill for a residential customer who purchases 73 therms of gas from Columbia each month will increase a total of $10.99 from $67.17 to $78.16 (16.36 percent). Under the company’s original proposal, the monthly bill for the same customer would have increased a total of $15.75 from $67.17 to $82.92 (23.45 percent).
Columbia Gas provides natural gas service to approximately 415,000 customers in 26 counties in Pennsylvania.
