PUC Directs Columbia Gas to Refund Customers

Published on 8/15/2013

HARRISBURG - The Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission (PUC) today voted to require Columbia Gas of Pennsylvania Inc. (Columbia Gas) to use all of its refund proceeds from Columbia Gas Transmission LLC (Columbia Gas Transmission) to provide refunds to Columbia’s residential and non-residential customers through the company’s purchased gas cost (PGC) rates.

In its petition, the company had asked to direct the $2.506 million residential portion of the refund to its Hardship Fund.  The Commission denied that part of the petition, and instead directed the Company to return this portion of its refund proceeds to residential PGC customers.  The Commission approved Columbia’s request for the remainder of the funds, approximately $857,939, to be refunded to its non-residential PGC customers.  Columbia Gas is receiving the refund from Columbia Gas Transmission due to a settlement approved by the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) at Docket Number RP12-2021.

Columbia Gas provides natural gas service to 415,000 customers in 26 counties in Pennsylvania.

The Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission balances the needs of consumers and utilities; ensures safe and reliable utility service at reasonable rates; protects the public interest; educates consumers to make independent and informed utility choices; furthers economic development; and fosters new technologies and competitive markets in an environmentally sound manner.
