PUC Fines PGW $1,000 Following Customer Complaint

Published on 12/5/2013

HARRISBURG – The Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission (PUC) today fined Philadelphia Gas Works (PGW) $1,000 for violating the Public Utility Code and Commission regulations.

“PGW exhibited poor customer service by failing to keep appointments and violated the Commission’s regulations as well as its own tariff by failing to issue monthly bills,” Commissioner Gladys M. Brown said in a motion.

The Commission voted 5-0 to approve the motion that included the $1,000 fine. The violations stemmed from a complaint filed with the Commission by Michael John Sottile of Philadelphia. In his complaint, Sottile cited ongoing service programs with PGW including failing to show up for three service appointments to turn on service; failing to bill him for three years.

The Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission balances the needs of consumers and utilities; ensures safe and reliable utility service at reasonable rates; protects the public interest; educates consumers to make independent and informed utility choices; furthers economic development; and fosters new technologies and competitive markets in an environmentally sound manner.
