PUC Final Rulemaking on Natural Gas Meter Locations

HARRISBURG – The Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission (PUC) today finalized a rulemaking on the location of natural gas meters and service regulators, which would make state regulations more consistent with the federal regulations and improve safety regulations.

The Commission voted 5-0 to finalize the rules for acceptable natural gas meter and service regulator locations and set guidelines for who pays for meter relocations. It also allows for meters to be located inside if the property is listed on, or eligible for, the national register of historical places or designated as historical under the state Historic District Act, Municipalities Planning Code or Municipal Home Rule Charter.

 The change in the regulations was prompted after the Commission instituted an investigation into the issue of gas meter placement and relocation.  As a result, the Commission determined that its existing regulations are vague, inadequate and out-of-date with respect to the federal standards that the PUC has adopted.
