PUC to Hold Public Input Hearing for Emporium Water Co. Proposed Rate Increase

HARRISBURG – The Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission (PUC) today announced it will hold a public input hearing on the proposed rate increase for Emporium Water Co.

Administrative Law Judge Dennis J. Buckley will conduct the hearing at:

On June 19, 2014, the Commission voted 5-0 to investigate the request, which proposes an annual increase in revenues of $401,903 (52.77 percent). This increase would increase the bill for a residential customer using 1,000 cubic feet of water per quarter from $82.76 to $138.14 per quarter, or by 66.9 percent.

The request was suspended for up to seven months and was assigned to the PUC’s Office of Administrative Law Judge for public hearings and a recommended decision or settlement. A final decision must be made by Jan. 29, 2015. More information on the ratemaking process is available on the Commission’s website.

Emporium Water provides water service to 1,358 residential customers in the Borough of Emporium and portions of Shippen Township, Cameron County.

Members of the public are welcome to attend the hearings and provide comments. Customer testimony will become part of the record on which the PUC will issue its final decision. The PUC and Office of Consumer Advocate offer tips on how to participate. They include:

• Prepare what you are going to say beforehand. Even though it is not required, you may want to write out your statement, which can be read.

• Bring copies, if you are attending an in-person hearing. If you have a written statement you would like to give to the judge as evidence, please bring two copies for the court reporter and several copies for the other participants.

• Plan to be questioned. Parties in the case may want to ask you a question to clarify something you said.
