PUC Reminds Consumers of Complaint Process Regarding Taxi Companies

HARRISBURG – The Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission (PUC) today reminded consumers of its official complaint process for those who are experiencing issues with certificated taxi companies outside of Philadelphia.

“If customers are experiencing service problem with taxis, we remind them they can file a complaint with the PUC,” said PUC Chairman Robert F. Powelson. “To ensure the complaint can be acted upon, we need consumers who are willing to testify to the time, place and nature of the alleged issue with their taxi service.”

Consumers can file an informal complaint through the PUC’s website or by calling the PUC’s Bureau of Consumer Services at 1-800-692-7380. Those filing complaints are asked to be as specific as possible as to time, date, place and the nature of their complaint. Examples of complaints include unreliable service; refusal to provide service; dangerous driving; failure to take the most direct route; meter not working or running fast; and unclean vehicles.

The PUC regulates motor carriers that transport property, passengers or household goods as well as brokers of passenger transportation between points in Pennsylvania for compensation. More than 7,500 carriers and passenger brokers operate in Pennsylvania under the rules of and regulations of the PUC. The PUC does not have jurisdiction over taxi companies operating in Philadelphia.

The Commission also has scheduled an Aug. 28, 2014, hearing to examine issues in the state’s transportation industry such as regulations on driver integrity and vehicle safety; appropriateness of current insurance requirements; enforcement of regulations and eliminating the requirement for a company to prove a need for service before entering a market. The Commission will use the information received to determine whether existing transportation regulations should be revised or otherwise updated in the future.

The Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission balances the needs of consumers and utilities; ensures safe and reliable utility service at reasonable rates; protects the public interest; educates consumers to make independent and informed utility choices; furthers economic development; and fosters new technologies and competitive markets in an environmentally sound manner.
