PUC Approves Order to Grant Manwalamink Water Co. Rate Increase Contingent Upon Conditions

HARRISBURG – The Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission (PUC) today approved a rate increase requested by Manwalamink Water Co. (Manwalamink) for Sept. 1, 2014, dependent upon the company’s acceptance of the terms in the Commission’s Order.

The Commission voted 5-0 to approve the Order, which gives the company an option to file a revised tariff supplement incorporating the schedule of rates as revised by the Commission for metered customers. Under this option, Manwalamink’s new rates would go into effect on Sept. 1.

If the company accepts the option, Manwalamink’s approved rate increase totals $54,106 (10 percent) a year. The bill for an average residential flat-rate, or unmetered, water customer would increase from $40.73 to $44.80 per month (10 percent). The total bill for an average residential metered customer would increase from $34.25 to $37.22 per month (8.67 percent).

If the company rejects this option, its proposed tariff will be suspended until Jan. 28, 2015, in order to allow the Commission to institute an investigation into whether the rates, rules and regulations contained in the company’s proposal are reasonable.

Manwalamink provides service to approximately 1,220 customers in portions of Middle Smithfield and Smithfield townships, Monroe County. More information on the ratemaking process is available on the Commission’s website.
