Media Advisory: PA Utilities to Launch Campaign with Law Enforcement Targeting Utility Imposters
Published on 5/29/2015
Filed under: Electric Gas Water and Wastewater Telecommunications
For years, thieves have preyed on unsuspecting Pennsylvania residents by posing as utility workers to gain access to the home. Once inside the home, the imposters typically divert the resident’s attention while the thieves or an accomplice steal money and valuables. The Keystone Alliance to Stop Utility Imposters was recently formed to educate consumers on how to protect themselves via a new public awareness campaign.
Who: The Honorable Mike Regan, State Representative (R – York)
Pamela A. Witmer, Pennsylvania Public Utility Commissioner
Louise Knight, Chairperson, Pennsylvania Chapter of National Association of Water Companies
Russell Bedell, Manager, Communications & Community Relations, Columbia Gas of PA
David J. Freed, Cumberland County District Attorney
Dane Merryman, Executive Director, Pennsylvania Chiefs of Police Association
What: The Keystone Alliance to Stop Utility Imposters, a newly formed coalition of local water, gas and electric utilities, will host a news conference to launch its joint effort with the Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission, Pennsylvania District Attorneys Association and Pennsylvania Chiefs of Police Association aimed at raising awareness to combat criminals who impersonate utility workers to rob homeowners.
In addition, Rep. Regan will present House Resolution 341, which he sponsored, to designate the week of June 8-12, 2015, as “Utility Imposter Awareness Week” across the Commonwealth.
When: Monday, June 1, 2015, at 10:30 a.m.
Where: Pennsylvania State Capitol Rotunda, Harrisburg
Visuals: At the news conference, coalition members will unveil a 30-second TV public service announcement and print collateral that are part of the awareness campaign. In addition, field personnel from local utilities will be on hand to illustrate how actual utility workers are attired, including authentic photo identification.
