PUC Approves Lower Rate Increase than Requested for Lehigh County Wastewater Company

HARRISBURG –The Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission (PUC) today approved a lower rate increase than requested by Allied Utility Services Inc. (Lehigh County).

The Commission voted 5-0 to approve a settlement allowing for an annual rate increase of $80,018 (32 percent). The settlement was reached among the PUC’s Bureau of Investigation and Enforcement, the company, the Office of Consumer Advocate and the Office of Small Business Advocate. The company had originally proposed an increase in annual revenues of $154,334 (61 percent).  Under the settlement, the quarterly bill for an average residential customer using 13,000 gallons per quarter will increase from $172 to $221.

The company provides wastewater service to 298 residential customers in portions of the Schnecksville North Sewer District and in North Whitehall Township, Lehigh County.

The Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission balances the needs of consumers and utilities; ensures safe and reliable utility service at reasonable rates; protects the public interest; educates consumers to make independent and informed utility choices; furthers economic development; and fosters new technologies and competitive markets in an environmentally sound manner.
