PUC Approves Energy Efficiency & Conservation Plan for Electric Division of UGI Utilities Inc.

Published on 6/9/2016

HARRISBURG – The Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission (PUC) today approved a voluntary Phase II Energy Efficiency and Conservation (EE&C) Plan submitted by UGI Utilities Inc. – Electric Division (UGI Electric).

The Commission voted 4-0 in favor of a joint settlement detailing UGI’s latest EE&C plan, which was submitted to the PUC by UGI Electric, the Pennsylvania Office of Consumer Advocate and the Office of Small Business Advocate. EE&C plans are required for Pennsylvania’s large electric distribution companies (EDCs) as part of Act 129 of 2008 – and the Commission has also encouraged smaller EDCs to develop voluntary plans. EE&C plans have promoted the adoption of energy-efficient lighting, appliances and other measures intended to help reduce consumption as part of a statewide effort to help reduce electric price volatility and ensure reliable electric service.

The voluntary EE&C plan included in the UGI Electric settlement includes a package of 11 programs, such as appliance rebates and recycling; customer and school energy education campaigns; fuel switching; energy audits; and other incentives for residential and commercial customers. The plan targets a 2-percent reduction in overall reduction energy consumption on the UGI Electric system at the end of a three-year period.

The Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission balances the needs of consumers and utilities; ensures safe and reliable utility service at reasonable rates; protects the public interest; educates consumers to make independent and informed utility choices; furthers economic development; and fosters new technologies and competitive markets in an environmentally sound manner.
