PUC to Investigate Rate Increase Request by Philadelphia Gas Works
Published on 3/16/2017
HARRISBURG – The Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission (PUC) today voted to investigate a proposed rate increase by Philadelphia Gas Works (PGW) for its natural gas service.
The Commission voted 5-0 to investigate PGW’s proposal, which was filed on Feb. 28, 2017. The Commission investigation will determine what, if any, of the requested general rate increase is justified.
PGW requested permission to increase annual revenues by $70 million (11.6 percent). Under the request, the average total monthly bill for a typical residential customer using 76 Mcf of gas per year would increase from $94.06 to $104.65 per month (11.3 percent).
The request is suspended for up to seven months and will be assigned to the Office of Administrative Law Judge for public hearings and development of an evidentiary record, culminating in the issuance of a recommended decision. A final decision by the Commission must be made by Nov. 28, 2017. More information on the ratemaking process is available on the Commission’s website.
PGW provides natural gas service to approximately 500,000 customers in the City and County of Philadelphia.
