PUC to Investigate Rate Increase Requests by Manwalamink Water Company and Manwalamink Sewer Company, Monroe County

HARRISBURG  – The Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission (PUC) today voted to suspend and investigate rate increase requests by Manwalamink Water Co. and Manwalamink Sewer Co., operating in Monroe County.

The Commission voted 5-0 to investigate the requests for annual revenue increases for the two companies.  Both requests are suspended for up to seven months and will be assigned to the PUC’s Office of Administrative Law Judge for investigation and a recommended decision.  A final decision by the Commission must be made by Feb. 1, 2018.  More information on the ratemaking process is available on the Commission’s website.

Manwalamink Water Co. proposes a total annual increase in operating revenues of approximately $82,445, or 20 percent.  Under the water company’s proposal, the total bill for an average residential customer with a 5/8-inch meter using 3,130 gallons would increase from $23.53 to $28.24 per month. 

Manwalamink Water Co. serves approximately 1,210 residential and 47 commercial customers in Smithfield and Middle Smithfield Townships, Monroe County.

Meanwhile, Manwalamink Sewer Company is seeking a total annual increase in operating revenues of approximately $29,007, or 5 percent.  Under the sewer company’s proposal, the average residential flat rate customer would increase from $44.80 to $47.04 per month, while the total bill for an average residential metered customer would increase from $35.59 to $37.38 per month.

Manwalamink Sewer Co. presently provides wastewater service to approximately 1,248 residential and commercial customers in Smithfield and Middle Smithfield Townships, Monroe County.
