HARRISBURG – The Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission (PUC), the County of Berks and local utilities will host Berks County’s 15th annual “Be Wise” social service event on Monday, Oct. 22, 2018, with a day-long program at the Double Tree by Hilton, 701 Penn St., Reading.

PUC Chairman Gladys M. Brown will address attendees at 8:30 a.m., highlighting the PUC’s ongoing study of energy affordability and assistance programs for low-income consumers.

The event runs from 8:30 a.m. until 4:00 p.m., and features panel discussions on such topics as Universal Service Programs; a LIHEAP 2018-19 Update; Medical Insurance; Employment Training; Financial Management; Housing; Youth and Family; Behavioral Health; Criminal Justice; PA Consumer Advocate Services and Consumer Protections.

The annual series of free “train-the-trainer” events brings together front-line community partners, utilities and key stakeholders in highlighting energy efficiency, conservation and customer assistance programs intended to help low-income households maintain essential utility services.

Reading is one of eight host cities across the Commonwealth – including the addition of a Lehigh Valley event – for this fall’s “Be Utility Wise” campaign.

The Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission balances the needs of consumers and utilities; ensures safe and reliable utility service at reasonable rates; protects the public interest; educates consumers to make independent and informed utility choices; furthers economic development; and fosters new technologies and competitive markets in an environmentally sound manner.
