On April 1, 2009, the 570 area code was put into jeopardy. An NPA (area code) jeopardy condition exists when the forecasted and/or actual demand for NXX resources will exceed the known supply during the planning/implementation interval for relief. All remaining codes (a code = 10,000 numbers) will be rationed so that the codes last until resolution of the relief process. The relief process will take three years. The result will be an area code overlay or split.

Thousands-Block Pooling

The 570 area code region  began the pooling on February 28, 2002. The FCC permitted 570 to be a mandatory pool.

With pooling, the present area code has been used more efficiently which led to delaying the need to add new area codes until now. The projected exhaust date for the 570 area code is the third quarter of 2013 with a full implementation of the new  272 overlay to be completed October 21, 2013.
