Area Codes

Summary

Until 1997, Pennsylvania had four area codes – 814 (northwest), 412 (Pittsburgh area), 717 (central) and 215 (Philadelphia). With the increased use of cell phones and other usage, the demand for additional telephone lines exploded. This demand created the need to expand beyond four area codes in Pennsylvania.

Through a combination of area code splits and overlays, Pennsylvania now has 15 area codes and now every area has at least 2 area codes, as shown in the map below. Once an area has 2 area codes, customers must dial 10 digits for all calls.
