PUC Fines Delaware County Taxi Company $19,000 for Violations

Published on 3/1/2007

HARRISBURG – The Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission (PUC) today fined S.S. Sahib Cab Co. of Upper Darby, Delaware County, $19,000 for providing service while under Commission suspension.

On Oct. 27, 2006, the Commission’s Bureau of Transportation and Safety filed a complaint alleging that the company operated while its certificate of public convenience was under suspension by the Commission for failing to maintain evidence of insurance on each of its vehicles. The company also failed to maintain complete log sheets and retain the log sheets for two years.

By law, companies are required to hold a certificate of public convenience from the PUC in order to transport property, passengers or household goods within the state.  Holding a certificate of public convenience ensures that the company has met all of the PUC’s safety and insurance standards.

The company had 30 days to respond to the complaint or the recommended fine of $19,000 would be imposed.  The PUC did not receive a response during that time. The company also is ordered to cease and desist from all further violations of the Public Utility Code or Commission regulations.

The Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission balances the needs of consumers and utilities to ensure safe and reliable utility service at reasonable rates; protect the public interest; educate consumers to make independent and informed utility choices; further economic development; and foster new technologies and competitive markets in an environmentally sound manner.
