PUC Approves Rate Increase for Monroe County Water Co.

Published on 2/14/2008

HARRISBURG – The Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission (PUC) today voted to approve a rate increase request by Birch Acres Water Works Inc.

The Commission voted 4-0 to allow the company to raise rates by about $6,230 (37 percent) annually.  The increase allows the company to continue making infrastructure improvements, including the repair of several inoperable meters.  The new rates will increase the bill for an average residential customer using 60,000 gallons a year by $143 from $385 to $528. The company serves 45 customers in Smithfield Township, Monroe County.  As part of the settlement agreement, the company has also agreed to monitor its levels of unaccounted for water.

The Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission balances the needs of consumers and utilities to ensure safe and reliable utility service at reasonable rates; protect the public interest; educate consumers to make independent and informed utility choices; further economic development; and foster new technologies and competitive markets in an environmentally sound manner.
