HARRISBURG - The Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission (PUC) voted today to approve a settlement for a rate increase proposed by Blue Knob Water Co.
The Commission voted 4-0 to approve the settlement, which was reached between the company, the state’s Office of Consumer Advocate and the PUC’s Office of Trial Staff.
Under the terms of the settlement, the company will be permitted to increase annual operating revenues by $53,521.29 (100.4 percent) through an increase of this amount in base rates. The company was originally requesting an increase of $114,374 (216.4 percent). The new rates will increase the average annual bill for residential customers based on an average usage of 4,000 gallons per month by about $36 from $35.34 to $71.48 (102 percent).
Blue Knob has also agreed to not seek another general rate increase prior to Dec. 1, 2009.
Blue Knob is a family owned water utility servicing approximately 287 customers in Greenfield Township, Blair County, and Union and Kimmel townships in Bedford County. The customer base is largely seasonal, and the company last received a rate increase in May 2001.
The Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission balances the needs of consumers and utilities to ensure safe and reliable utility service at reasonable rates; protect the public interest; educate consumers to make independent and informed utility choices; further economic development; and foster new technologies and competitive markets in an environmentally sound manner.
