PUC Approves Lower Rate Increase than Requested for Wastewater Company in York County

Published on 12/4/2008

HARRISBURG – The Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission (PUC) today voted to approve a lower annual rate increase than requested by EXIT II WWTP Inc.

The Commission voted 5-0 to allow the company to increase its annual rates by approximately $31,113 (31.14 percent).  The company had originally proposed an annual increase of $77,500 (77.56 percent).

If the company does not file a tariff or tariff supplement to reflect the recommended change in rates, the original request of a $77,500 annual increase will be suspended until July 5, 2009, for further investigation.  The matter will then be assigned to the Office of Administrative Law Judge for public hearings and a recommended decision or settlement.  More information on the ratemaking process is available on the Commission’s Web site.

The company provides wastewater service to 11 metered commercial and eight metered industrial customers in an industrial park in portions of Springfield and Shrewsbury townships, York County.  According to the company’s filing, the proposed increase is necessary to compensate the company for ongoing increases in costs and the need to make improvements in the treatment process.  The company’s last increase in rates was in July 2006.

The Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission balances the needs of consumers and utilities to ensure safe and reliable utility service at reasonable rates; protect the public interest; educate consumers to make independent and informed utility choices; further economic development; and foster new technologies and competitive markets in an environmentally sound manner.
