HARRISBURG – The Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission (PUC) has scheduled two hearings to receive public comment on the proposed rate increases by CMV Sewage Co. Inc.

Administrative Law Judge Elizabeth H. Barnes will conduct the public input hearings:

2:00 p.m., March 7, 2011

Chanceford Township Community Building

51 Muddy Creek Forks Road

Brogue, PA  17309

7:00 p.m., March 7, 2011

North Codorus Township Community Building

1470 Fire Hall Road

Spring Grove, PA  17362

Members of the public are welcome to attend the hearings and provide comments.  Customer testimony will become part of the record on which the PUC will issue its final decision. The PUC and state Office of Consumer Advocate offer tips on how to participate.  They include:

  • Prepare what you are going to say beforehand.  Even though it is not required, you may want to write out your statement, which can be read.
  • Bring copies.  If you have a written statement you would like to give to the judge as evidence, please bring two copies for the court reporter and several copies for the other participants.
  • Plan to be questioned.  Parties in the case may want to ask you a question to clarify something you said.

On Jan. 27, 2011, the Commission voted 5-0 to investigate the request. A final decision must be made by Sept. 1, 2011.  More information on the ratemaking process is available on the Commission’s website.

CMV has asked for an increase of $10,786 (6.8 percent) for its Chanceford Manor Village Division. As part of the company’s proposal, the annual bill for an average residential customer using about 54,024 gallons of water a year would increase from $568.56 to 607.24 (6.8 percent). The Chanceford Manor Village Division serves about 275 customers.

CMV has asked for an increase of $259,746 (213.4 percent) for Colonial Crossing Division. The present bill of $460.84 is based on an annual usage of 54,024 gallons.  Under the company’s proposal, the annual bill would increase to $1,501 that includes a flat rate charge of $333.75 per quarter plus a quarterly surcharge to repay a one-time fee required for CMV to connect to the North Codorous Township Authority’s treatment system.  The Colonial Crossing Division serves about 165 customers.

The Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission balances the needs of consumers and utilities to ensure safe and reliable utility service at reasonable rates; protect the public interest; educate consumers to make independent and informed utility choices; further economic development; and foster new technologies and competitive markets in an environmentally sound manner.
