HARRISBURG – The Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission (PUC) today approved a lower rate increase than requested by Columba Gas of Pennsylvania Inc.

The Commission voted 4-0 to approve a partial settlement for a $17 million increase in rates. The company’s original request was for a $37.8 million increase. The average residential customer will experience a 7.75 percent increase in distribution rates, compared to an 18.91 percent increase under the company’s original proposal.

The settlement also includes an increase in funding for Columbia’s low-income programs that includes a $1 million increase in annual Low Income Usage Reduction Program funding.

Columbia Gas provides natural gas service to approximately 411,000 customers in 26 counties in Pennsylvania.

The Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission balances the needs of consumers and utilities to ensure safe and reliable utility service at reasonable rates; protect the public interest; educate consumers to make independent and informed utility choices; further economic development; and foster new technologies and competitive markets in an environmentally sound manner.
