PUC Directs Verizon North LLC to pay $1,250 Civil Penalty

Published on 12/20/2012

HARRISBURG –The Pennsylvania Utility Commission today ordered Verizon North LLC to pay a $1,250 civil penalty for alleged violations of the state Public Utility Code and Commission regulations.

The Commission voted 5-0 to approve the penalty, which stems from a formal complaint filed by a consumer alleging a reliability, safety or quality problem with Verizon North’s basic telephone service.  The complaint alleged multiple service outages within an 18-month period. It was determined that Verizon North had violated Commission regulations and the Code on telephone service interruptions and that it did not take substantial actions to restore service within the required 24-hour time frame.

Verizon North LLC provides telephone service to approximately 260,000 customers in 31 counties in Pennsylvania.

The Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission balances the needs of consumers and utilities to ensure safe and reliable utility service at reasonable rates; protect the public interest; educate consumers to make independent and informed utility choices; further economic development; and foster new technologies and competitive markets in an environmentally sound manner.
