HARRISBURG – The Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission (PUC) today approved the manner in which UGI Utilities Inc. – Electric Division will secure default service supply for the company’s non-shopping customers for the period of June 1, 2014 through May 31, 2017.
The Commission voted 5-0 to approve the plan. Commissioner James H. Cawley issued a statement.
Several terms of the plan include:
- UGI will work with the Office of Consumer Advocate and the Commission’s Office of Communications to revise the customer call center script related to its new and moving customer referral program to include education about how to compare prices and offers from electric generation suppliers (EGSs) with the price to compare (PTC) charged by UGI, explaining the difference between fixed and variable generation supply contract options, and educating customers about how UGI’s PTC changes over time;
- UGI will develop a script for the standard offer customer referral program; and
- UGI will not incur any further costs related to the development of the Standard Offer Customer Referral program until at least one EGS seeks to participate in the program;
UGI Utilities Inc. – Electric Division provides electric distribution service to approximately 62,000 customers in portions of Luzerne and Wyoming counties.
The 1996 Electricity Generation Customer Choice and Competition Act provides that electric distribution companies, or a Commission-approved alternative supplier, will provide default electric generation service to customers who have not selected an alternative generation supplier. Under current law, the default service prices for electric generation service are required to be based upon a “prudent mix” procurement strategy that will produce the least cost to customers over time.
The Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission balances the needs of consumers and utilities; ensures safe and reliable utility service at reasonable rates; protects the public interest; educates consumers to make independent and informed utility choices; furthers economic development; and fosters new technologies and competitive markets in an environmentally sound manner.
