HARRISBURG – In an effort to streamline procedures and more efficiently use Commission resources to regulate taxis and limousines under its jurisdiction, the Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission (PUC) today amended its current motor carrier passenger regulations.
The Commissioners voted 5-0 to approve a motion on the rulemaking that eliminates the vehicle list requirements for taxis and limousines; replaces the 8-year vehicle age limitation for taxis with either a 10-year age limitation or a 350,000 mileage limitation, whichever comes first; and replaces the 8-year vehicle age limitation for limousines with a vehicle mileage limitation of 350,000 miles. Through this rulemaking the Commission also incentivizes the use of qualifying alternative fuel vehicles (AFVs) in taxi service by extending the age limitation from 8 model years to 12 model years for those qualifying AFVs.
The Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission balances the needs of consumers and utilities; ensures safe and reliable utility service at reasonable rates; protects the public interest; educates consumers to make independent and informed utility choices; furthers economic development; and fosters new technologies and competitive markets in an environmentally sound manner.
